OUR HIKE
For those who are unfamiliar with the term, a "thru hike" is hike of the entire Appalachian Trail in a twelve month period. While the majority of thru hikers begin at the southern terminus, Springer Mountain in Georgia, or the northern terminus, Mount Katahdin in Maine, and then hike continuously to the other end, we will be attempting a flip-flop. After a great deal of over-analysis, we opted to begin our hike at the half-way point of Harper's Ferry, WV then hike north to Katadhin. We will then return to Harper's Ferry and hike south to Georgia.
This will keep us out of the snow in Maine and the summer sun in the south, and help us to avoid the worst of tick season in the mid-Atlantic. Perhaps, just as importantly, we will bypass the flood of hikers in the southern states in spring and summer, giving us a more remote wilderness experience.
